Breed Age Average Percentages (BAA%)
for Holstein Cows

(Effective February 1, 2003)

To calculate your BAA%:

1. Calculate an age and stage of lactation adjusted score.

a. Determine how old (months) the cow was and what lactation she was in when she was classified. Look up age adjustment factor on the table below.

b. Determine how many months in milk and what lactation she was in when she was classified. Look up stage adjustment factor in the table below.

Note: No adjustment factors are used if the cow is permanently scored (i.e., over 60 months of age).

2. Breed Age Adjusted score is calculated by comparing the cow's adjusted score to breed average and multiplying by 100. The average adjusted score for the Holstein breed is 80.2 points.

(Final score + Age adjustment factor + Stage adjustment factor ) = ( Cow's adjusted score
              80.2
 X 100 )= BAA

The lowest ten percent of the individual cow BAAs are excluded from the official herd BAA. In cases where ten percent of the entire herd inventory does not equal a whole number, the number of cows to be excluded will be rounded down to the closest whole number. Example; if the entire herd inventory includes 56 cows with BAAs, the five cows with the lowest individual BAAs will be excluded from the official herd BAA.

Cows cancelled the day of classification will be considered part of the entire herd inventory. They will be excluded from the official herd BAA only if their individual BAAs rank in the lowest ten percent of the herd. Cows with a previous score(s) that are marked "NIC" or "60 Day Rule" will be considered part of the entire herd inventory. They will be assigned the BAA reflective of their score and age at their most recent classification. Cows with no previous score that are marked "NIC" will not be considered part of the entire herd inventory.
