National Animal ID FAQ's

When is national animal ID going to be mandatory in the US?

USDA's implementation plan continues to set an aggressive timeline for ensuring full implementation of the NAIS (National Animal Identification System) by 2009. This means by 2009, their NAIS system will be fully operational, all premises will be identified, and all newborn animals will be officially identified.

What is an official animal ID device?

The bovine industry endorses ISO compliant Radio-frequency ID tags (RFID) ear tags for their retention and readability rates. When the tag is placed correctly it is the most cost-effective and practical technology available today. This is the same tag that is already mandatory in Canada.

What numbers will be on these tags, and how does that change what I do today?

The single RFID tag will replace any metal USDA, vaccination tags or DHIA tags. The number programmed into and printed on the tags will be the “Animal ID number” that will be “one number fits all.” It will be preceded by a country code, 840, and followed by the animal’s unique number.

Can I get these RFID tags today and start
putting them in my calves?

Yes, the RFID tags we offer at Holstein today are grandfathered in, according to USDA language already on record, so you should not have to worry about retagging cattle when the deadline comes. But 2009, is a ways away, so there is no 100% guarantee. If you aren’t using any tags today, visible tags are a great way to start.

Is USDA going to help pay for these tags?

The cost of the tags will be the producer’s responsibility.

How else can I use these tags on my farm?

Milking parlors, herd management systems, and handhelds with RFID readers are
emerging into the marketplace. Ask your dairy farm consultants about opportunities that might be available.

Do I need an ID number for my farm too?

Yes, you need to acquire a “Premises ID.” Contact your state Department of Agriculture for more details, but this is something you can do easily today to prepare for national animal ID and it won’t cost you a thing. You may also visit IDairy for more information!

So how will Holstein and National FAIR play a role?

Roles are yet to be defined as industry and animal health officials find a way to meet all their needs. But rest assured, with our experience and reputation as experts in animal ID, we will keep you compliant for any animal ID and tracking requirements. National FAIR was established as USDA’s pilot project for national animal ID and is a basic blueprint of the plan in place today.
