Installing the program

Minimum installation requirements

486DX/33Mhz PC, 8MB Ram and 4MB of free disk space
Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, or Windows 95 operating system

Installation instructions for Windows 3.1:

Step 1) Insert the diskette labeled DISK 1 into your computer.
Step 2) Start Windows and from the Program Manager menu select Run.
Step 3) After the next window appears, at the prompt type A:\SETUP (or B:\SETUP) and click the OK button. This will start the installation program.
Step 4) Follow the instructions on the screen to complete installation.

Installation instructions for Windows 95:

Step 1) Insert the diskette labeled DISK 1 into your computer.
Step 2) Select Run from the Start button.
Step 3) After the next window appears, at the prompt type A:\SETUP (or B:\SETUP) and click the OK button. This will start the installation program.
Step 4) Follow the instructions on the screen to complete installation.

Starting the Program:
Windows 3.1:
After the installation program has completed a window will appear with the following header: Scoreboard for Windows. Inside the window you will find the Scoreboard for Windows icon. To start Scoreboard (SCB), double click on this icon. The Scoreboard main menu will appear.
Windows 95: After the installation program has completed, select Programs from the Start button then select the Scoreboard for Windows folder and the Scoreboard for Windows icon will appear. To start Scoreboard double click on this icon. The Scoreboard main menu will appear.

To receive more information about how to run SCB you can select the On-line help menu by pressing the F1 key anywhere in the program.

Import your cow data

Before you analyze your cows you will first have to import your cow data. The cow data file will be supplied to you on the first, or on a separate diskette. Copy the files labeled with a .EXT extension to your C:\SCORE directory using the Windows 95 Explorer or Windows 3.1 File Manager. Start the Scoreboard program. To import data, select from the main menu Import Cow File. An OPEN file dialog box will appear listing all the files available to import. Click in the left box on the file you wish to import and click the OK button.

SCB will read in your data and calculate averages for your herd. You only read in a file once, SCB will evaluate the same cows until you import a new data file.

Show Individual Cow

To view individual cow information, select from the main menu Show Individual Cow. The Individual Cow Classification Scores Screen will appear. To view a specific cow you can click in the drop down list box in the top left corner and select a registration number. If you do not know the registration number, provide in the edit box to the right of the registration number box the animal's barn name or number and press ENTER.
SCB provides you with 3 different overview screens for an individual cow:
        Last Classification
        All Prior Classifications
        Trait Analysis
Click on the tab for the overview you wish to review.

The Trait Analysis Overview allows you to set up your linear goals (GOALS) for each trait and the importance (WEIGHT) the trait has to you. If you push the Calculate button SCB will list the three traits that would need most improvement based on the cow's stage and age adjusted scores in combination with your goals and weights.

Print Reports

SCB allows you to select a group of cows based on your criteria. To select a group of cows select from the main menu Print Reports. The Cow Selection Screen will appear. In the Available Criteria list-box on the left side of the screen you will find all traits that can be included in your selection. Double click on a trait you wish to include in your selection. All the traits you selected will appear in the Criteria list-box in the middle of the screen. To set a minimum value for a specific trait, double click the corresponding line in the Value list-box and provide your minimum value. You can also change the default operator (>=) by double clicking the corresponding line in the Operator list-box. After you have repeated these steps for all traits selected, press the Run button. SCB will search for cows matching your criteria and list the number of cows found in the bottom right corner.

Search Options
By default, SCB will exclude cows with missing values for any of the traits you included in your selection. If you wish to include cows with missing values, press the Include cows with missing values check-box.

If you wish to include cows that match one or another criteria press the Insert Group button in between the traits you wish to select on. For example:

   Criteria  Operator  Value
   11 Lactation  =  1
   16 Final Score  >=  82
   NEW GROUP    
   11 Lactation  >=  2
   16 Final Score  >=  85


The above criteria will search for cows that are first lactation with final score greater or equal to 82, or cows with 2 or greater lactation with final score greater or equal to 85.

Saving the selection
SCB allows the user to save a criteria selection by pressing the Save Setup button and providing a name for the criteria setup. To select a previously saved criteria selection setup, search the Selection Criteria Description combo-box on the top left of the screen and click on the description you wish to use.

Viewing the selected cows
To view the cows that were selected click on the Show Cows button. The Selected Cows Screen will appear.

To include traits and data items on your report click on the Select Database Items button. The Select Data Items Screen will appear. The Available Data Base Items list-box shows all items you can include on your report. Double click on an item to include in your report. The Selected Data Base Items list-box shows the items that are included on your report. To return to the Selected Cows screen press the Exit button. To sort on a specific trait or data item, select the Sort on combo–box and select the trait you wish to sort on. Select the sort order by pressing the Ascending, or Descending radio-button. To display the report, click on the Display button. SCB will show the items you selected in the grid on the left side of the screen. If you wish to view data that is displayed outside the boundaries of the grid, use the scroll bars at the right and bottom of the grid. You can also reduce the font size by pressing the Font button. and selecting a smaller font size.

Show a specific cow
To look up a cow that is listed in your report, select the line in the grid that has the cow listed and double click. The Individual Cow Classification Scores Screen will appear. To return back to your report, press the Exit button

Saving the report
SCB allows the user to save a report set up by pressing the Save Setup button and providing a name for the report setup. To select a previously saved report setup, search the Report Description combo-box on the top left of the screen and click on the description you wish to use.

Evaluate Selected Cows

SCB has the unique feature to compare the selected group of cows against all other cows in the herd. To evaluate a group of selected cows, select from the main menu Print Reports. The Cow Selection Screen will appear. Select a group of cows before you press the Evaluate button. Once the Evaluate button is pressed the Cow Selection Evaluation Screen will appear. Select from the X-Value and Y-Value list- box two traits you wish to graph and press the Graph button. SCB will graph selected versus non-selected cows. To review the cow associated with a graph point, double click on one of the graph points.

Lactation Averages

The Lactation Average report can be accessed from the main menu by pressing the Lactation Averages button. The Lactation Summary Screen allows the user to view averages by lactation group as well as a Trait Analysis for each group of cows. Trait Distribution

To evaluate the distribution of cows for the 16 linear traits from the main menu press the Trait Distribution button. The Trait Distribution Screen will appear. The trait distribution allows you to create three groups of cows:
        Below minimum
        Optimum (between minimum and maximum)
        Above maximum
You can define your minimums and maximums by changing the values in the edit boxes for each trait (valid values are between 1 and 50). To calculate the distribution summary press the Calculate button. You can also graphically present the number by clicking on the Graph Analysis tab.

Sire Evaluation

To evaluate linear averages by sire press the Sire Evaluation button on the main menu. The Sire Evaluation Screen will appear. SCB will calculate averages by sire for the 16 linears, breakdowns, final score, CTPI, and BAA. To change the sort order of the report click on the Sort Order combo-box and select the field you wish to sort on. Then select the Ascending or Descending radio button to indicate the sort order.
